Comics in NumPy? More Likely than You Think!
11-02, 10:55–11:35 (America/New_York), Music Box (Room 5411)

Reading documentation: what if you could flip through a comic book in your hands, instead of scrolling online? What if you read a story instead of a bullet-point list? What if comics were documentation...?

Is that possible? It sure is! In this talk, we'll dive into the NumPy Contributor Comics, which were completed for Google Season of Docs 2023 (GSOD). Let's get more comics in open source!

This talk will detail:

  • Origins: How handing out 300 comics at SciPy 2022 led to the GSOD grant
  • Inspirations: Manga, the Turing Way and more
  • Brainstorming with the NumPy community
  • Peek into the artist studio: Writing a script and visual metaphors
  • Sharing knowledge outside PyData communities: Open Source Design
  • Integrating artistic processes into existing platforms: How do you "PR review" a comic script?
  • Deconstructing the myth of the solo virtuoso

Attendees will leave with knowing:

  • Why illustrations are awesome and worth adding to documentation
  • How to invite and engage with designers into PyData projects
  • Release your inner artist and start creating comics for your projects!

In-person attendees will receive a physical, paper comic in the talk's room. Check out the digital version here: https://heyzine.com/flip-book/3e66a13901.html
